With the right techniques, Help a Reporter Out (HARO) can help you build connections and build brand awareness for PR efforts, regardless of your industry.

The HARO platform, owned by PR/communications giant Cision, connects journalists seeking information with relevant sources willing to provide that information.

Journalists come from a variety of platforms, from the New York Times to Forbes to niche bloggers.

HARO stories can cover anything from real-time news to blogs seeking quotes on specific topics like SEO.

HARO is a great tool because it benefits both parties; journalists get their source and speakers get a link.

Unfortunately, the HARO system has become overloaded over the years, which means that it is much more difficult to receive a response for a response to a request than before.

But when used correctly, HARO offers a valuable system for acquiring links and building valuable business relationships, even as the competition has intensified.

I know this platform from both sides, as a link building/branding tool for clients and personal businesses – and as a journalist looking for information on articles I’ve worked on for several sectors.

This article provides unique insights from both sides of the platform.

The following tips can help you achieve successful link building and brand awareness results with HARO.

How to Filter HARO Results

If you subscribe to HARO’s master list, you will be bombarded with hundreds of queries daily, which can be difficult to sift through.

At the very least, I recommend setting up a filter in Gmail for all incoming HARO emails, setting them to Read, and directing them to a specific label.

You can also try setting up a more detailed filter in Google Mail by filtering out all emails with address haro@helpareporter.com and all relevant keywords, automatically sending them to a labeled inbox.

Both strategies will ensure that you are not overwhelmed with daily emails, which helps keep productivity high, and the latter will help you filter emails by specific keywords.

Additionally, HARO offers the option to upgrade to a paid plan where it will only email you queries that match specific keywords you wish to answer.

As a general rule, you should only respond to queries that meet the following criteria:

  • You are qualified to answer them.
  • They are pertinent to your industry.
  • You have read the guidelines carefully.
  • You are able to add unique value for them.

You will increase your chances of being published by answering the right questions.

Now let’s talk about creating the perfect pitch.

How to create the perfect HARO pitch

Start with the right subject line

First, to receive a response to your HARO response, you must create an appropriate subject line that will not be overwritten.

Keep it simple by using parentheses to stand out among other subject lines and to establish immediate credibility:

[HARO Response] Job Title/Expertise + Powerful Adjective + Repeat Subject of Query

For example, let’s say I was responding to a query looking for a quote on productivity tips for entrepreneurs. I would write an answer line like this: “[HARO Repsonse] CEO/Author Productivity Tips for Entrepreneurs.

You can also experiment with subject lines to help you get noticed, such as “Time management tips you won’t get from someone else.”

Keep testing to see who generally has the highest conversion.

Lead with expertise and references

Then start your answer with some background information.

Responses should open with a one- to two-sentence paragraph bragging about your credentials to help you get chosen. Journalists love authoritative sources, so don’t be afraid to brag, but don’t spam or sell.

Follow these guidelines to help you create the perfect intro:

  • List your name and current position.
  • Cite any publication you were featured in.
  • Link to all companies or the websites you manage.
  • Mention all credentials that help you stand out.

For example, your answer might start like this:

“Hello (requester),

I hope everything is okay.

This is Ron Lieback, author of ‘365 to Vision: Modern Writer’s Guide’ and CEO/Founder of ContentMender. My articles have been featured in several leading publications around the world, from Forbes to Search Engine Journal to Cycle World…”

After your introduction, you will present a response that should satisfy the requirements of the query.

Know how to format your answer

The key to creating a perfect response is giving reporters exactly what they want. These requirements include:

  • A short answer (1 paragraph, 2-3 sentences).
  • A good quote (usable information).
  • Correct grammar (spelling correction and respect for punctuation).
  • concise writing (no lint, or BS, ever).
  • Easy to scan answer [spaced nicely, easy to follow, incorporates bullets (optional)].

Cut down on the formatting, then you can create the perfect template to use for your presentations and streamline your responses.

Throw a single angle

Adding value is key to getting your quote or response included in a story.

However, you don’t do much to stand out by adding mundane or recycled information.

Here are some arguments you can try to get your response included in a reporter’s story:

  • Cite personal anecdotes that relate to your business or job title.
  • Citing original research you or your business are done.
  • Add controversial point which goes against the grain.

You could take a dozen angles, but ultimately delivering an original response makes you stand out from the crowd.

Also, if the reporter’s name is on the HARO request, research it and add some personal notes.

It shows that you have put effort into the response, which will stand out from the noise.

Read and follow the presentation rules carefully

It goes without saying, but be sure to respond directly to the terms and conditions of the query.

Often when people use patterns or try to outwit the system, they end up hurting themselves.

And if a name or publication is on the HARO application, please use them. Again, the more personal it feels, the more appealing it will be.

Read the HARO requirements

This last point is key because many people jump on these points and end up ruining their answers by breaking one of HARO’s rules.

Consider the following when responding to a HARO request:

  • No consideration (link exchange or payment for a link).
  • No product pitch.
  • Link all images (HARO’s system cannot render images).
  • No attachments (HARO will mark your reply as spam).

Although HARO is an effective system for link building, I have some additional tips to help you unlock greater benefits by using this style of PR link building.

5 tips for using HARO more effectively

1. Respond to emails quickly

According to HARO, the HARO infrastructure reaches approximately 75,000 journalists and more than one million sources.

With this competition from other link builders and contractors, you need to answer questions quickly and efficiently.

Although creating a template can help with formatting, I recommend that you simply create a template for your introduction and then practice quick responses for HARO queries.

Responding to same-day requests can dramatically increase your chances of being mentioned in an online post.

2. Choose quality over quantity

HARO sends out three emails a day with seemingly endless requests. Trying to respond to hundreds of queries as quickly as possible will ensure that you don’t receive a single response.

Instead, focus on a few a day, taking the time needed to reflect and add a valuable response.

It may seem like an inefficient use of your time, but I guarantee you will achieve a higher conversion rate using this strategy.

3. Establish a relationship with journalists

The best link building strategies are those that build successful relationships for your business or brand.

Just because you got featured in an article doesn’t mean you have to end the relationship there.

Consider the following strategies for becoming a repeat source in blogger or journalist posts:

  • Share and promote published contentby directly tagging the journalist.
  • Send follow-up email relay your interest in future articles if sources are needed.
  • Ask to speak with the journalist or blog directly using their personal email.

I even used HARO to score new customers and build relationships that led to future business opportunities by staying in touch with journalists and bloggers.

4. Keep track of contacts

Streamline your HARO link building strategy by gathering contact information for all the sources you get links from to contact at a later date.

Create a spreadsheet and keep track of stories and contact details related to your HARO reporter list.

You can also cross-reference your sheet with your link building software to see which backlinks are generating the most traffic and which sources are useful to reuse in the future.

5. Contacting people outside HARO

Finally, if you want to improve your conversion rate using PR link building, consider reaching out to journalists outside of HARO.

Many journalists are bombarded with responses in the HARO system, so it’s easy to stand out by emailing journalists directly.

Use a site operator search on the website of the company they are writing for to find out their email address. This strategy isn’t guaranteed to work, but it can be a way to stand out.

Conclusion

HARO is a valuable link building tool that can be difficult for beginners to master.

Although conversion rates are generally low, these backlinks are often a valuable source of traffic and link equity to websites, helping them grow their business in the long run.

Use HARO and other strategies to promote your brand and take your business to the next level.

Link building is a necessary step in any effective SEO strategy. Search engines are constantly changing their algorithms and it has never been more important for businesses to adapt. It can be difficult to keep track of what works and what doesn’t, especially as the SEO landscape continues to change.

It’s also hard to know where to start when looking for resources like link building strategies. That’s why we’ve created this essential guide to link building for SaaS businesses. This guide has everything you need to know about link building and how it impacts your SEO strategy.

The 3 Essential Link Building Steps for SaaS Companies

Link building refers to an SEO strategy that involves getting links from other web pages to your website. When used correctly, it can help Saas businesses achieve critical benefits. For example, link building can help your business website rank high on the search engine results page. It can also help drive more traffic to your website. More importantly, it can be a great way to make your website more credible.

With these things in mind, there’s no doubt that link building can be invaluable to your overall SEO campaign. But to get a more favorable result, you need to learn how to implement the best link building strategies.

In general, Link building can involve quite complex strategies that require a lot of effort, such as HARO pitches, but overall there are three essential components of effective link building that every SaaS company should adhere to.

These are the basic strategies used by established link building services like the top link building agencies recommended by sites like Search engine countries. The best link building services adhere to these strategies while developing them, so it is important to understand the basic components to developing an overall link building strategy.

Create valuable content with technical information.

Creating valuable content should always be a top priority. Your goal is to produce quality content that people will find educational and informative, while directing them to your desired outcome (conversion).

But what exactly makes content valuable? It’s not just good grammar and formatting, but the message you’re conveying to the reader. Are you providing actionable insights or just getting people to sign up?

The internet is already full of short buzzwords urging people to try this or that software, but has anyone ever explained to consumers exactly what pain points the software addresses and how the software can be used to overcome them?

Not just a few short sentences of “Our software can help you achieve this (generic pain point, like increasing ad revenue)”, but a very detailed explanation of “This is exactly how our software helps you achieve this” with detailed use cases. That’s the job of your content.

To start writing valuable content for your target audience, you want to understand what people are asking about your niche. Check out social websites like Reddit and Quora, find popular technical questions people ask about SaaS software, and write content that answers those kinds of questions in detail.

Build relationships with webmasters.

After writing great content, you need to find a place for it and secure future guest posting opportunities. This is where relationship building comes in – you need to find websites that post content relevant to your niche and offer them your content to post on their site.

For a SaaS business, you will likely be pitch your content influencersbusiness and technical software blogs, but you may also need to target marketing, design, or technology websites.

To find suitable blog hosts for your content, you will need to target large-scale sites that publish a lot of new content and research the type of content these blogs tend to publish.

Many websites will actually ask you to pay them to include links to your website, even if you provide free blog content – this is because webmasters in recent years have realized the value of outbound links, c has therefore become a source of income for websites.

But if you provide truly valuable content that engages the website audience and drives traffic for them, you can more easily strike a deal that benefits all parties involved.

On the other hand, if you find it difficult to find websites to host your content, working with a professional link building service provider is a great option. By hiring an experienced link building company, you can focus on developing quality content while the company builds SaaS backlinks For Your Business.

Track and improve your guest post stats.

Return on investment from link building does not happen overnight – in many cases, it can take several months before you start to see significant improvements.

That’s why it’s important to monitor your metrics, celebrate the small steps along the way, and be prepared to change and adapt to improve your results.

For example, you might notice that a particular blog post on a website gets a lot of engagement in the comments section, but very little CTR on your backlinks.

In this situation, you would want to consider whether your hyperlinks are visible enough, or perhaps too visible and obvious – people want to click on links that are placed organically and naturally in the flow of an article, not an attempt obvious to get them to click on something.

Conclusion

Like other SEO strategies, link building plays a vital role in promoting your SaaS business in the digital world. But to reap its benefits, you need to familiarize yourself with the essential strategies to implement on your website. Fortunately, by keeping the above information in mind, you will know how and where to start your link building efforts.

Link Building: Should You Pay Attention to DA and DR Metrics?

Michael Littman on Deep Learning VS Reinforcement Learning, Machine Learning and Markov

Link building takes a lot of practice to be perfect. When it comes to specific measurements, there are two that often get in the way. DA and DR can be the stars of your show, but getting them to appear requires a strong supporting cast.

Domain Authority

One of the most successful link building strategies requires understanding domain authority. In search engine results pages, DA is the score used to determine your ranking. The score ranges from 1 to 100, with 100 being the score that every website strives for. Several factors go into making up a DA score, with changes being made all the time. This prevents websites from messing with the system when things get too predictable. Creating digital strategies based on DA results requires going through countless results. Machine learning can help alleviate some of this pressure, but there is still a highly functional human component that can never be replaced.

Ranking of the domain

The stronger your backlink profile, the higher your domain rating will be. DR ranges from 0 to 100, and the top of the scale puts you in elite territory. Calculating DR isn’t as complicated as DA, but can give you fake penalties if you’re not careful. Your backlink profile is compared to websites, so you will need more than high quality backlinks to get a high DR. When you first get into this field, it’s best to oversimplify the necessities. There are many popular websites that live and die by their DR by refusing to change. The lesson here is that what works for one campaign can be the same metric that sinks you on the next.

The difference

DR ranks you based on backlinks compared to other websites. DA uses several changing analytics to rank you up or down in search engine results. Domain Authority emphasizes the strength of automated analytical algorithms. And on the other side, domain rating measures the quality and quantity of backlinks which officially affect their placement.

This last piece of DR information is important because it has a bigger impact on your SEO health. Think of DA as a prediction of your website ranking, while DR represents the steps to get there. Remember that domain authority is powerful, but changes too much to constantly manipulate. Focusing solely on domain authority will bring your website down instead of helping it. Use the strengths of DA and DR to your advantage when you want to see the best results.

So when does it matter? There is no dead website if you are willing to put in the work. DA and DR guarantee that a website is still in the fight, even if it has failed to compete before. You just have to be prepared to use the combined efforts of both measures where they matter most.

Build a strong portfolio

How you manage links can make or break your website. Find the right balance and adjust it to improve the whole. The more you learn from your mistakes, the better your future plans will be.

If you want to ensure that your website is ranked as highly as possible, it is essential to ensure that search engines trust the content you provide to customers. One of the ways you can do this is to build links.

Of all the different elements of the search engine optimization (SEO) process, link building is considered one of the most difficult. In fact, one in five marketers say this is their least favorite part of SEO.

However, as a professional SEO services agency in London, link building has a wide range of benefits that can grow your business and improve your rankings in Google.

So how does link building help SEO?

Let’s take a look at 12 of the main benefits.

1. Link building helps SEO because it shows your website is trustworthy

Search engines like Google only want to show users the highest quality and trusted web results.

The more sites linked to yours, the more it shows that your content is reliable and trustworthy.

Take the BBC website for example. There are currently almost 657 million links to the BBC website, meaning it is widely regarded as a reliable source of information. This means that when you search for a news article, the BBC will likely be at the top of the search results.

2. Link building helps SEO because it means more clicks to your website

High quality backlinks mean your page is more likely to rank on the first page of Google.

This means that your site has more visibility in search engines, which generates more traffic.

3. Link building helps SEO because it adds context to your website pages

When most people think of link building, they think of links to other websites. However, a high-quality internal link building strategy can also help your website.

With internal linking, you link the pages of your website together. This not only makes your website easier to navigate, but also provides additional context for Google. Google uses internal linking not only to find new content on your website, but also to identify the relationship between certain pages.

4. Link Building Helps SEO As It Grows Your Brand

If you want to be a thought leader in your industry, link building can help you get there. Getting articles and content from high-quality, reputable websites is a great way to show that you have the expertise to help potential clients.

And the more customers trust your content, the more Google will too.

5. Link building helps SEO because it drives referral traffic to your website

Backlinks on other websites help drive traffic to your site, especially from customers who have never heard of your brand before. This means you see an increase in web visitors and an increase in conversions.

High-quality referral traffic can show search engines that your website is valuable, which helps rankings.

6. Link Building Helps SEO Because It Means You Create Better Content

While you can reach out to other websites and request a backlink, some websites will link to your content without needing a push from your marketing team.

It’s a great incentive to create well-researched and engaging blog posts, reports, infographics, and videos.

A solid content marketing strategy means more links, which means better SEO results.

7. Link Building Helps SEO Because It Improves Your Metrics

Good link building can not only increase visits to your website, but also increase other metrics. Backlinks can improve metrics like Domain Rating (DR), Domain Authority (DA), and Page Authority (PA).

While these metrics don’t directly affect SEO per se, they are highly correlated with higher rankings and traffic. Additionally, they can help open the door to new digital PR opportunities and relationships.

For example, some companies will only work with bloggers and influencers whose DA is above a certain amount.

8. Link building helps SEO by introducing your business to new markets

If you’re planning to launch your product or service in a new country or demographic, link building can help you get there.

By focusing your link building efforts on websites and directories in a new territory or niche, you can boost your SEO and launch your brand new campaign.

9. Link Building Helps SEO Because It Brings You New Sales

Affiliate link building is a special type of link building in which an influencer places a unique link to your site on their pages. If someone buys something from your website using the link, they get a share of the sale.

This type of link building is smart because it’s in the influencer’s best interest to promote the link to your site. This leads to more traffic, increased sales and rankings for you, and money for them.

10. Link building helps SEO because it improves your website at no cost/low cost

As long as other websites keep your link on their website, you can reap the benefits of link building for a very long time.

Although a link building campaign can take some time to implement, it can be a sustainable way to boost your SEO in the long run.

11. Link building helps SEO as it supports other websites with their SEO

So far in this article, we’ve covered how link building can help your website. But it can also help with SEO on other people’s websites.

Suppose website A links to a resource on website B. However, website B no longer exists and the link is broken.

Contacting Website A to let them know and suggest they link to a similar resource on your site is a win-win situation. You get a high quality backlink and they get rid of a broken link which could negatively affect their SEO.

12. Finally… Link building helps with SEO because it builds relationships with other websites

The final SEO benefit of link building is that it allows you to connect with other people in your industry. When you email or call another website owner to request a backlink, you begin to build relationships.

This can help build trust in your business and may even lead to additional backlink opportunities as website owners recommend you to other people.

Italy: the country of delicious ice cream, fine arts and beautiful beaches lapped by a turquoise sea.

It is also a country that offers enormous opportunities in the world of e-commerce, having the 14e largest e-commerce market in the world – ahead of Brazil and Spain in the rankings!

In 2021, the Italian e-commerce market grew by an impressive 17%. With huge potential for future growth, it’s no surprise that many companies are trying to claim a piece of the Italian pie.

The question is, what is the best way to build links in Italy and attract Italian buyers to your site? Keep reading to find out.

1. Create guest posts

Creating guest posts with a link to your site, which you then publish on carefully selected Italian blogs, is a great strategy.

It gives an almost instant boost to your rankings with www.google.it, and – provided it is of a high-quality editorial standard – is likely to be widely shared.

This works in two ways: it means more backlinks and acts as an advertisement for your business because more of your new audience sees your name (and hopefully clicks on the backlink to your site!).

Image: Unsplash

It is often beneficial to create this content from scratch, rather than trying to translate what you have already used on an English site, as it will be more suitable for an Italian audience.

Once you’ve created your Italian-friendly content, it’s also crucial that you post it on a high-authority blog with high editorial standards.

Blogs with large followings are more likely to read — and then share — content with that all-important backlink, so you need to know which sites to target.

Luckily, you can outsource your link building campaign to a European SEO agency with experience in Italian link building to save time.

2. Focus on quality

Speaking of time, Italians are known to take their time, which certainly applies to how they make decisions online.

And, with successful national programs giving people over the age of 60 access to internet literacy training, there are even more potential Italian customers – many of whom have plenty of time to read reviews, as well as to absorb the content. on your site with care.

This means that if you are linking to your site, first make sure your site is Italy ready.

Proofread carefully (use native Italian for this) and make sure all your internal links work and pages load quickly.

As well as impressing your potential new customers, the latter two are important for your general Italian SEO as they will also impact your Google search rankings, so they are particularly important.

3. Think about your new audience

speaker with audience

Just because that blog you posted about the best places to buy fish and chips in British seaside resorts has been all the rage in the UK doesn’t mean Italians would be too interested.

That’s why it’s important to bear in mind the cultural context of anything you write and ask yourself if you think it would work with your new target audience.

And now that you’ve decided what you want to translate, be sure to…

4. Use human translators

We all know machine translation has gotten better and better, so what’s the point of hiring Italian language experts when you can just use a robot?

While an automatic translator can be a pretty good way to find out what kind of fish a merluzzo is before you order your dinner when it comes to translating your site’s content from English to Italian, it’s imperative that you use a native Italian translator!

These are not just translated words; it’s the cultural nuances and meanings.

The words have connotations that might not be immediately obvious to a non-native.

For example, let’s say you want to say “good luck”. A quick look at an AI translation tool tells us that the words you need are buona fortuna. It makes sense – “good fortune”.

Great! Except for Italians, it’s widely accepted that these words are only really used if you don’t really mean them – sort of a way to jinx anything that requires luck.

Instead, Italians are more likely to say in bocca al lupo – literally, it means “in the mouth of the wolf” and it’s a bit like the phrase “break a leg” in English.

Fortunately, a native Italian will know how to translate this for you and avoid any inadvertent offense caused by using the wrong term.

Italy is a wonderful place both offline and online – and it’s a market with great potential as you grow your business.

Building Italian links is the perfect starting point for getting your site noticed in Italy, and with these simple steps, you’ll be flying in no time. In bocca al lupo!

A link remains one of the most powerful ranking signals for search engines. Links play an important role in determining which pages search engines will show in their results. For this reason, Google is investing in improving its link analysis, such as Penguin 4.0.

Specifically, Google is constantly experimenting and testing its search results. Thus, it would be better to diversify your link profile to create a robust backlink profile that can withstand search engine adjustments.

But how would you do that? In this article, you will learn how to diversify your link building profile. But first, let’s define and explain its meaning.

What is link diversity and why is it important?

Your website receives a backlink when another website links to it. A diverse link portfolio refers to high-quality backlinks obtained from various web sources.

You can boost your off-page SEO and increase traffic to your website by building backlinks. However, the source of these links determines their impact on your Google search ranking.

Although many backlinks from the same sources rarely harm your website, occasional backlinks from new sources will have a much greater impact than frequent ones.

An algorithmic logic is that a website with a wider reach will be more relevant to a wider audience. Whenever other websites link to your content, Google may consider peer review, which improves your domain’s authority and rankings.

Best places to diversify your link portfolio

Consider the following places for various links:

High authority specific niche sites

Getting links from high authority niche websites is the key to success. Getting those links can also be difficult. That’s why you need the GetMention agency to help you get them. Consider these links as your input. As long as you have tasty side dishes and desserts, you won’t need a whole lot of them.

Lower Authority Niche Sites

Although high authority sites are the go-to, low authority sites still have a lot of value if they are in your niche. Quantity is critical here. You won’t gain much from a link. However, a few dozen links from lower authority sites will be noticeable.

Unrelated High Authority Niche Sites

Free backlinks from high authority websites outside your niche are acceptable. Google’s algorithm considers a backlink from a site with high domain authority to be beneficial. But it would be better if you also have links in your niche to balance things out.

Website and blog directories

Website and blog directories won’t give you much link juice, but they’re worth grabbing. These links are easy to grab, free and legal, so why not grab them?

Blog Comments

Blog comment sections are not the place to post your last post. However, active participation and commenting on blogs also has its merits. You can occasionally slip in a relevant comment if you do it enough.

Participation in forums

You won’t get a lot of backlinks from forums, but you will get traffic from them. Again, your links should be relevant and not spammy. If you don’t, you risk getting banned.

How to diversify your link portfolio

The different link building tactics sound great, but how do you implement them? Here are some suggestions:

Diversify your methods

Link building tactics usually target specific pages – for example, scholarship link building for scholarship pages and blogger outreach for guest blogs/posts.

You can diversify your link profile by applying different methods of acquiring links to other pages. For each link building tactic to be effective, more than one person must perform each phase. To get better results, you need well-trained link prospectors and outreach specialists.

Develop different link building strategies for different groups

Consider outsourcing the link building process to other companies. If you want to work with a link building agency or team, it will be helpful to consider one or two. You will not only work for different pages (pages dedicated to link building), but you will also use link building techniques.

Because of this, you can diversify the links you receive each month. Therefore, you can assign different pages and have your outsourcing team work on other tactics if you have a huge budget.

Engage multiple audiences that can be linked

The basic idea for developing a white-hat link demand strategy is to target different linkable audiences for each piece of content you produce. Let’s say you want to create an article about child abuse, another article for children, teens, and veterans, and there are pieces of content for people with PSTD.

You can target each of these audiences with your content assets. Link building is not just a mix of methods. You are also targeting resource links on relevant sites.

Take advantage of the latest link opportunities

You can get more business exposure and conversion assistance by building natural links that lead to real business exposure and convert more customers. Recent links from your competitors are a great place to start. You can analyze your competitors’ links using a link analysis tool like Ahrefs.

Evaluate the content they’ve posted on their blog to see if it could be adopted or morphed into an angle of your own. The more systematic your approach to acquiring authoritative links, the more likely you are to diversify your link profile organically and manually.

How diverse are you?

Quality, relevance, quantity and diversity are the essential ingredients of a strong link portfolio. Authenticity relies on the diversification of link patterns, but people pay little attention to it. Acquiring links from various sources has a positive effect based on empirical evidence and common sense.

Acquiring and managing a diverse basket of links is not easy. Building deep links to hundreds of pages while keeping everything straight and avoiding redundancy is a challenge.

To manage the diversity of links, you have to be organized. Be sure to keep a detailed log of your linking activities, including each link’s sources, targets, and content.

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur the contributors are theirs.

Human beings like to think simplistically. We like to categorize concepts and see things in black and white. We like to skip nuance in favor of a one-sentence summary. And when it comes to complex marketing strategies like search engine optimization (SEO), we like to boil down hypothetical approaches into a handful of actionable tactics.

Perhaps that’s why so many modern SEO experts have tried to make SEO synonymous with link building. But here’s the thing, while link building is important for SEO, it’s not the only factor to consider. And if you focus too much on link building, it could end up costing you your chance at the top rank.

SEO and link building

First, we need to recognize that link building is very important for SEO. This is mainly because the links have a tightly interconnected relationship with your domain authority. Your domain authority is an invisible score that represents how trustworthy your site is to Google and other search engines. The higher this authority, the more trustworthy your site is considered and the higher your ranking in relevant searches will be.

Although the main link quality rating system is sophisticated, it’s generally true that the more links you have and the more authoritative those links are, the higher your domain authority will be. Building links on websites that already have high authority will pass some of that authority on to you, accelerating your domain authority increase.

However, if you focus exclusively on link building, you will sabotage your campaign. While it is very difficult to increase your domain authority without active link building, if you focus exclusively or too much on link building, it will only work against you.

SEO Essentials Without Link Building

If you focus too much on link building, you’ll neglect other important elements of search engine optimization, including:

  • Keyword research: First, there is the importance of keyword research and keyword targeting. As mentioned, a higher domain authority will increase the likelihood that your business will rank well in relevant searches. But what are these relevant searches, exactly? What keywords are you targeting and what phrases are your customers using to find you? If you don’t know or aren’t targeting any particular keywords, your strategy will be pointless and your domain authority won’t do much to attract new organic traffic.
  • On-site technical referencing: Google tends to reward websites that are technically and functionally optimized. In other words, the better your site performs and the more user-friendly it is, the higher it will rank. Not all the links in the world will make up for your site not working on mobile devices or being incredibly slow to load. You need to make on-site technical SEO an integral part of your larger strategy.
  • Content on site: Of course, you also need to focus on your on-site content. It’s a vehicle for your keywords, providing the perfect opportunity to optimize your site for specific phrases. This is also an opportunity to naturally build your domain authority. Without this solid on-site content to serve as the focal point of your link building strategy, you’ll also struggle to build high-quality links.
  • Offsite content: Modern link building revolves around creating masterful off-site content, which can be used to provide a link to a knowledgeable publisher. If you focus too much on the link or the publisher, you’ll neglect that content. As a result, not only will your link be weaker, but you also risk damaging your brand reputation.

The irony of an over-focus on link building

There’s a bit of irony in focusing too much on link building because if you don’t focus on those other things, link building becomes more difficult.

While it’s possible to intentionally and manually build high-quality, natural-looking links to your website, it’s also important to naturally attract links whenever possible. Partly because Google will penalize your website if it appears you are participating in link schemes and partly because naturally attracted links tend to come from a variety of different sources, thus building your authority.

Without content (or bad content), you will never attract those natural links. You will be entirely dependent on manual link building – and even then, you won’t have powerful content to serve as a destination for your new links.

I’m not here to make bash links. On the contrary, I think it is the most important element of SEO to master. But we have to honestly acknowledge that link building isn’t the only aspect of SEO you need to pursue – and if you focus too much on link building, it will work against you.

Today’s Ask an SEO question comes from Taha in Chicago, who asks:

My question is about e-commerce SEO. Currently, I work as an SEO Executive for an e-commerce brand. They have no content on the site and their total backlink profile is around 1,000 links (which is nothing compared to competitors).

What area should I focus on first in order to rank category pages? Should I favor on-page content and optimizations or create backlinks to compete with my competitors’ profiles?

Taha, excellent question.

The short answer is: you should start with content and on-page optimization.

Now let me give you the long answer, which applies to more than the category pages you mentioned.

Start with on-page SEO

Backlinks are important and we know they are part of the ranking algorithm.

However, you need to have optimized content on the website so that search engines know what to rank your website for.

Below is a brief checklist of what to focus on in terms of on-page optimization before you start investing time in link building.

1. Determine your keywords and themes

If you haven’t already, spend some time identifying your keywords.

Go from broad to narrow when building your list, but keep in mind that relevance is the most important consideration.

Even if you identify general terms, they should still be targeted and relevant to your categories and products.

When doing keyword research, I like to brainstorm first, then expand my seed list using tools like Semrush, SE Ranking, or SpyFu.

Once my list is built, I will then prioritize it, generally in three categories: Priority 1, Priority 2 and Priority 3.

You will need to assign keywords to your website pages, which is called keyword mapping and will help you avoid keyword cannibalization.

After completing this process, it’s time to optimize your pages.

Keep in mind that it’s common to have 2-3 main keywords per page and several secondary keywords.

2. Optimize your pages

When optimizing your pages, focus on your title tags, header tags (especially H1s), body text, and image alt attributes.

Even though the meta description does not play a big role in ranking, you should also optimize it.

There are best practices to follow when optimizing, which you can find in The Complete Guide to On-Page SEO.

Here’s a pro tip: Use Google Search Console to determine if the search engine is already recognizing your pages for relevant queries.

The performance report in Google Search Console will show you the queries for each page.

If any of these queries sound like good keywords, or maybe they are already on your list, focus on those keywords when optimizing the related page.

You can update the page title and/or H1 to include the keyword(s).

You might even look for opportunities to embed the keywords more into the body of the text, but never stuff keywords. Content should read naturally.

3. Add relevant content

Adding optimized content is essential for any type of website, and e-commerce is no exception.

Since you mentioned category pages in your question, I’ll focus on recommendations for this type of content.

First, know that category pages offer many possibilities to add text.

However, many businesses are reluctant to add too much text on category pages because they believe it will hurt the shopping experience.

The good news is that there are creative ways to add optimized text without being too intrusive.

Target.com is a good example.

The following is a screenshot of the Baby Gifts category.

When you scroll down the page, you can see optimized text with a consumable option (i.e. Show More).

Screenshot from Target.com, June 2022

TheCompanyStore.com provides another category content example that also includes FAQs.

e-commerce category optimization business storeScreenshot from TheCompanyStore.com, June 2022

In the two examples provided, a website visitor can still easily scroll through the products as they move down the page.

The content contained towards the bottom of the page is good for optimization purposes, but also useful for the visitor.

Revise + Refine

One final note: after optimizing your pages, always be on the lookout for opportunities for improvement.

This is where the pro tip I provided can help.

Make a habit of monitoring the performance of your pages and making updates as needed.
