How to Delete/Remove Hyperlinks in MS Word Document

MS Word automatically adds hyperlinks to documents when you enter or copy and paste URLs. Then you can open the web pages in the browser by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the links. Although they can be useful website shortcuts in some documents, not everyone needs URL links. For example, it’s kind of pointless to include hyperlinks in printed pages, isn’t it? This is how MS Word users can remove document links to convert URLs to plain text.

Remove hyperlinks with Word context menu options

First, you can remove selected hyperlinks with Word’s context menu options. Select a link in a document with the cursor. Then you can right click on the link to open the context menu in the photo below. Select the Remove Hyperlink option to convert the URL to plain text.

You can also right-click a link and select Edit Hyperlink. This opens the window below. Press the Remove link button in this window and click OK.

Remove all hyperlinks with keyboard shortcuts

However, you can only remove one hyperlink at a time with the context menu options. If there are many links on multiple pages, it is best to remove all hyperlinks with Word’s keyboard shortcuts. First, press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A to select all text in the document. Then press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + F9 to remove all links.

Remove hyperlinks from documents with macros

The macro recorder is a handy tool included in Word. This allows you to record a sequence of selected options and play back the macro if needed. Or you can set up a macro that removes hyperlinks from all open Word documents by manually entering Visual Basic code instead.

First, press the keyboard shortcut Alt + F11 to open the Visual Basic editor. Click Insert > Module to open a module window where you can enter the macro code. Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the code below into the Word module window.

Under KillTheHyperlinksInAllOpenDocuments()“—————————————————–‘Remove all hyperlinks from all open documents‘The text to display remains intact“—————————————————–Dim doc as documentDim szOpenDocName as string

Then press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + S to record the macro. To run the macro, select File > Macro > Macro and select KillTheHyperlinksInAllOpenDocuments. This will remove all hyperlinks from open Word documents.

Copy and paste plain text hyperlinks

If you copy and paste links to a Word document, you can paste URLs as plain text. First, copy the website link to clipboard with shortcut key Ctrl + C. Then you can right-click in Word and select a Keep Text Only option from the context menu. This pastes the url in plain text, but don’t press enter after pasting as this reverts the url to hyperlink format.

There are also various third-party programs that allow you to paste copied text without any formatting. For example, you can add the PureText program to Windows by clicking Download on this page. This converts copied links to unformatted text when you press its Win key + V hotkey. You can also paste text into Word documents by pressing Win key + V hotkey.

Add Kutools to Word

Kutools is one of the best Word add-ons that adds a brand new toolbar tab to the application. Kutools sells for $39 on its website, and there is also a trial version. This add-on also gives you a quick way to remove all links from a document by clicking Kutools > More tab and then selecting the Remove Hyperlinks option. You can also select the Business tab and click Remove to clear the link formatting from URLs.

Disable auto-formatting of Word hyperlinks

Word automatically converts URLs to hyperlinks, but you can configure the application not to. First, select the File and Options tab to open the Word Options window. Click Review > AutoCorrect Options to open the window below.

Select the Auto-format as you type tab, which includes an Internet and network paths with hyperlinks check box. Now deselect the Internet and network paths with hyperlinks option in this tab. Press the OK buttons in the AutoCorrect and Word Options windows. Now all URLs entered in Word documents will remain in plain text.

So there are different ways to convert URL links to plain text in Word documents. Word provides keyboard shortcuts, context menu options, add-ons and macros with which you can remove hyperlinks. If you also need to remove hyperlinks from Excel spreadsheets, check out this Tech Junkie guide.
