The number of backlinks is irrelevant for the Google search algorithm

The debate over quantity of backlinks versus quality has been around for quite some time.

Some marketers say quality backlinks are all you need to improve look for ranking. You don’t have to worry about the number of backlinks as long as they are high domain authority websites, they say.

Meanwhile, a few marketers advocate the number of backlinks.

According to these marketers, the quantity of backlinks you generate is far more vital than the quality. Additionally, these few minimized the impact of quality backlinks on search rankings.

But which one is correct?

In a recent Hangout SEO Google Search Central, the question of the quality of the backlinks compared to the quantity arose again. A site owner wanted to know if the number of backlinks mattered to Google.

The question bed:

“What matters more? The number of unique referring backlink domains or the total number of backlinks?”

Here is Mueller’s response.

Muller advises site owners not to focus on the total number of links pointing to their website.

Similarly, the total number of unique references areas doesn’t matter much to Google. Instead, the search engine focuses on how relevant each link is to the website it points to.

According to Mueller, this is how Google determines the weight of individual links.

His response reads as follows:

“We’re trying to figure out what’s relevant to a website, how much should we weigh those individual links, and the total number of links doesn’t matter. “

Mueller pointed out that a site could build millions of links across multiple domains and Google could ignore them all. However, a single link from a relevant source could send a stronger signal to the search engine.

He explained:

“Or there could be a very good link from a website which is, for us, a very important sign that we should treat this website as something relevant because it has this link.”

Mueller’s answer couldn’t be clearer in this regard: Google prioritizes quality of backlinks over quantity.
